10 things you do not know about Peter Obi’s running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed
Prior to the general election in 2023, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s nominee for president, named Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, a former federal lawmaker, as his running partner.
According to Obi, the vice presidential candidate has excellent credentials, great personal, academic, and entrepreneurial strengths, as well as a wealth of experience as a politician, businessman, public servant, economist, and specialist in economic and development.
He characterized Baba-Ahmed as a well-known wealth manager and creator who meets the profile of a transformative and flexible leader. “I am convinced that with Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed by my side, we will ensure that no state or community will be left behind in bringing Nigeria ahead,” he said. Here, are 10 things you need to know about Peter Obi’s running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed:
1. Datti was born to the Baba-Ahmed family in Zaria in 1976. His father, Baba Ahmed, was a well-known lecturer and authority on Islamic law who began his career as a cattle dealer from modern-day Mauritania.
2. As a Federal representative in 2006, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy after finishing his PhD studies at the University of Westminster. He earned a Bsc and Msc in Economics from the University of Maiduguri.
3. Before entering politics, Obi’s running companion worked for security printing and minting in Lagos.
4. As a representative of Zaria in the Federal House of Representatives and a member of the All Nigeria Peoples’ Party (ANPP), Baba-Ahmed launched his political career in 2003. He and others rejected President Olusegun Obasanjo’s bid for a third term during his stint as a Federal lawmaker, which he claims was a significant victory for Nigerian democracy.
5. He won the Kaduna North senatorial election in 2011 while running for the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), but the PDP candidate later contested and lost the poll in court.
6. He founded and serves as provost of Abuja’s Baze University. The institution opened its doors for business in April 2011.
7. In April 2011, Baba-Ahmed won the Kaduna North Senate seat, which he held for the years 2011 and 2012.

8. Baba-Ahmed has regularly voiced his disapproval of President Buhari’s monetary strategy for Nigeria. He recently revealed in an interview with Arise TV that “mismanagement and corruption” are to blame for Nigeria’s dismal economic trajectory. He claims that these factors are the cause of Nigeria’s low economic fortunes. “They (the government) did not understand from 2015 that in order to rescue Nigeria’s economy, the first thing you have to do is put a stop to the slide in Nigeria, and define Nigeria as an appreciating currency, use that to attract foreign currency when foreign currency can come into Nigeria and be safe and translate at the right exchange rate, foreign investors will come, when naira is realized by the companies at the right exchange rate, they do not have to rush to defraud,” he said.
9. Regarding restructuring, he has also stated in a 2018 interview that he will support any legal constitutional move that will raise the standard of governance, improve the functioning of the nation, and give every Nigerian a sense of ownership over the Nigeria project.
10. He also ran for the People’s Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 2018. (PDP). Prior to joining the Labour Party in 2022, he withdrew from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP primary) for the Kaduna governorship.
