6 Reasons Why Artificial Intelligence May Impact Humans Negatively
Artificial Intelligence has made life easier for humans, and will continue to do that with the various innovations coming in per time. However, anything with benefits will also have its downsides, and same goes for AI. As much as many want to focus only on the good that AI brings, we should also take note of the negative consequences, so we can know how to manage the problems before they become major ones. Legendary Physicist, Stephen Hawking said, “Success in creating effective AI could be the biggest event in the history of our civilization or the worst. So we cannot know if we will be infinitely helped by AI or ignored by it and sidelined, or conceivably destroyed by it.”
Many scientists and notable people believe that there is a need to be cautious, as AI can prove to be very dangerous to humans. Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates believes that there are dangers associated with AI, but if managed properly, the good can overrule the bad. Now is the best time to be on the lookout for any negatives that may have come with AI, so we can effectively handle them.
Below are some reasons why Artificial Intelligence may impact humans negatively
- A shift in human experience
AI has taken over the menial jobs that we are to do and has reduced the time we need to get things done, this might look like a huge benefit, but for life to has purpose, we’ll need to channel that freedom into other activities that give the same social and mental benefits. There will be a shift in people’s experiences, and it might also affect the economy of nations. Change might be easier for some people than others. It will also increase the money spent on machines to do things that humans are supposed to do. As much as we might want to focus only on the benefits of AI to jobs and tasks, we should also consider its impact on human life and experience.
- Global Resolutions
Technology has made our world a much smaller place, and people can interact with anybody from other parts of the world even from their homes. However, this implies that AI requires new laws and regulations that will be determined by various governments to allow for safe and effective global interactions. Since we no longer to see physically to make decisions and communicate with people, the decisions, regulations, and actions taken by one country concerning Artificial Intelligence can greatly affect another country. This is already happening in the world today, for instance, Europe uses a great regulatory method to allow for consent and transparency, but the US and China allows their companies to make use of AI without restriction, and this is having effect on the economy of Europe.
- Increase in Hacking
Artificial Intelligence makes it possible to do a lot of things and achieve more within a very short time, and as humans, it has made it more difficult for us to keep up tabs. Automation has made doing jobs faster and easier, but it has also increased the acts of phishing, and using malware on software applications. It has also led to a rise in hacking important information online, since most companies and individuals now rely on online platforms to save their data and important information. This might not look like a priority to right now, but when it becomes rampant and our data are no more safe online, then it will be a major issue we need to look into.

- Loss of jobs
Automation is seriously taking over the jobs that humans are supposed to do. Although people predict that there will be an increase in jobs or at most, a creation of jobs that will replace the ones taken over by machines, the fact still remains that there are some jobs that will no longer require humans to do. This will bring about a change in training and education programs to prepare the future workforce and also help current workers get new jobs to utilize their skills and abilities. An increase in unemployment in a country like Nigeria will do more harm than good, as it will bring many other problems along with it, such as increase in armed robbery, or internet fraud, or other atrocities.
- AI Terrorism
With the increase of AI inventions, there will also come with it a new form of terrorism to deal with – AI-enabled terrorism. AI can be programmed to do evil by using it as a dangerous weapon. People can use drones and robotic swarms to easily perform atrocities or spread global diseases without us being aware of it. It is currently predicted that nuclear arms will be replaced with autonomous weapons, which will reach more people than the conventional ones. It will require time and great reasoning to prepare for the future and minimize the negative impacts of AI terrorism as possibly as we can. This form of terrorism won’t be an easy nut to crack, but as much as there are still human involvements, we can tackle it and use AI more to our advantage than having to face the negativities it brings. The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin said, “Artificial Intelligence is the future, not only for Russia, but for all humankind. It comes with enormous opportunities, but also threats that are difficult to predict. Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world.”
- Social manipulation
Social media is a very good tool for target marketing. It has a record of who/what we like and what we’re good at doing, and so this makes it easy for evildoers to extract people’s information online and use it for manipulation or to change election results, like it happened in the 2016 US presidential election, and the UK’s Brexit referendum. AI can target social media users and spread information to them in any format, making it sound convincing. With the invent of technology and AI, you might not be able to distinguish between spam messages and real ones. For instance, AI can be used to send emails to people, posing as real companies and convincing people to reveal their sensitive information and data.
