Early life and education

Ovia attended Ika Grammar School in Agbor for his secondary education. He then proceeded to study business administration at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1977. He later obtained a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 1979. He also attended Harvard Business School as an alumnus.
After graduating, he returned to Nigeria and started his career in banking. He worked for several banks, including International Merchant Bank, Lion Bank, and Merchant Bank of Africa. He gained valuable experience and insights into the banking industry, and saw an opportunity to create his own bank.
His Banking career
Ovia began his banking career in 1973 as a clerk at Union Bank of Nigeria. He rose through the ranks to become a branch manager and then a regional manager. In 1980, he joined International Merchant Bank (IMB), a subsidiary of First National Bank of Chicago, as a financial analyst. He later became a manager and then a deputy general manager.
The Zenith Bank story
In 1990, Ovia and some colleagues established Zenith Bank as one of the first generation of private banks in Nigeria with a vision to provide excellent customer service, innovative products, and cutting-edge technology. He started with a capital of $4 million and a staff of 50. He faced many challenges and risks, such as political instability, economic downturns, and regulatory changes. But he persevered and overcame them with his passion, intuition, and courage. He served as the chief executive officer and managing director of the bank from 1990 to 2010, and then as the chairman from 2010 to 2014. He returned as the chairman in 2016 after a brief hiatus.
Under his leadership, Zenith Bank grew rapidly and became one of the leading banks in Nigeria and Africa. It expanded its operations to several countries, including Ghana, Sierra Leone, Gambia, South Africa, China, and the United Kingdom. It also diversified its services to include insurance, pensions, stockbroking, and investment banking.
Today, Zenith Bank has over 500 branches, 10,000 employees, 9 million customers, and $16 billion in assets. It is listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange. It has won numerous awards and recognitions for its performance, governance, innovation, and social responsibility.
Jim Ovia’s achievements
Jim Ovia is not only a banker but also an entrepreneur. He has invested in various sectors, such as telecommunications, real estate, oil and gas, power generation, and media. He is the founder of Visafone Communications Limited, a mobile network operator with 3 million subscribers that was later acquired by MTN Nigeria in 2016.. He is also the chairman of Cyberspace Network Limited, a provider of internet services and solutions.
Jim’s Philanthrophy
Jim Ovia is also a philanthropist who cares about giving back to society. He is the founder and chairman of two foundations: Mankind United to Support Total Education (MUSTE) and Youth Empowerment / ICT Foundation. These foundations provide scholarships for underprivileged students and promote information and communication technology among Nigerian youths.
He is also a member of several boards and councils that support education, health care, economic development, and national security. He has donated generously to various causes and institutions, such as Lagos State University (LASU), Redeemer’s University for Nations (RUN), Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), National Information Technology Advisory Council (NITAC), Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), American International School (AIS), Nigerian Internet Group (NIG), Honorary International Investor Council (HIIC), etc.
Honours and awards
He has received many honors and awards for his contributions to society. He was conferred with the national honor of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022. He was also awarded honorary doctorate degrees by several universities; he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by the University of Benin in 2012. He is a member of the World Economic Forum, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Economic Summit Group.

Jim is married to Kay Ovia, a businesswoman and philanthropist who runs Quantum Markets and Starwood Hotels. They have two children, Isioma Ovia and Jesse Ovia, who are both pursuing their careers in different fields. Jim Ovia comes from a large family and is the second son of Obi Olihe of Agbor-Obi, a respected chief in Delta State. He is also a generous who enjoys spending time with his family and friends, as well as reading and travelling.
