9mobile was founded in 2017 after the exit of Etisalat. Etisalat Nigeria is a subsidiary of Etisalat from the United Arab Emirates. Etisalat exited the Nigerian telecommunication market due to its inability to service an outstanding loan –a loan of $1.2 billion, which was incurred during its early years in the country. Airtel Nigeria has taken a lot of names and identities over the years. First, it was V mobile; then it became Celtel, then Zain, and now it is rebranded as Airtel Nigeria.
