LONG TERM INVESTMENTS IN NIGERIA
An asset or object purchased to generate income or appreciation is referred to as an investment. The term “appreciation” refers to an asset’s value increasing over time. When a person buys something as an investment, the goal is not to consume it but to build wealth in the future.
It can refer to any medium or process that generates future income, such as bonds, equities, real estate, a business, etc. To understand long term investments, it’s important for the reader to take note that investments are categorized under two broad bands
- Short Term Investments
- Long Term Investments
A short-term investment is one in which you expect to get your money back in three years or less. Your investment approach should, ideally, protect your money from losing value in such a short period of time. That usually entails a trade-off: your money will be safer, but you won’t see as much gain as if you invested in a riskier investment vehicle.
Anything very liquid—in other words, investments that can be cashed in quickly—is an example of a short-term investment. Savings accounts, U.S. Treasury bills (not to be confused with longer-maturity Treasury bonds), money market accounts, and short-term certificates of deposit are all examples (CDs). Bonds can have maturities ranging from one to three years.
A long-term investing strategy might include higher-risk investments because your money has more time to recover after losses, a long-term investing strategy might include higher-risk investments. Making a long-term investment usually means you won’t need the money for at least ten years.
Stocks, longer-maturity bonds, and mutual funds—a collection of investments, including stocks and bonds, managed by a fund manager—are examples of long-term investments. ETFs (exchange-traded funds) are investments that consists of a collection of stocks or bonds that can be exchanged more frequently than mutual funds. REITs (real estate investment trusts) are another long-term investment option that allows investors to put their money into real estate developments that are anticipated to yield a profit.
Categorically, there are five (5) major types of long-term investments:
Stocks are frequently the first thing that comes to mind when someone thinks of investing. Although stocks are often short-term, you can turn them into a long-term plan by investing in those that will gain in value over time.
Bonds can be purchased from companies, municipalities, and even the United States Treasury. You’ve got a low-risk investment on your hands if you choose bonds with maturity dates that correspond to your timeline.
Mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are comparable to equities in that they are packaged into a portfolio. Individuals invest in these fund managers’ holdings. It’s almost as if you’re betting on the manager’s knowledge rather than on the stock itself.
A CD is a certificate that you receive in exchange for giving a bank money. The certificate will show the amount you deposited, the interest rate, and the time frame you selected. The longer the duration of your CD, the more interest you’ll earn.
Real estate investing is an excellent alternative since it may provide you with continual passive income while also increasing in value over time. It’s also a tangible asset with a variety of exit alternatives for you to take advantage of.
There are opportunities for long-term investments in Nigeria and a couple of them will be highlighted in the course of this article.

- CRYPTOCURRENCY AND BLOCKCHAIN INVESTMENT
Cryptocurrency is regarded as one of Nigeria’s largest and riskiest investment prospects. Cryptocurrency is leading the financial technology and digital transaction market outside of Nigeria. Purchasing cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin, and others are a lucrative investment possibility if you have some spare cash.
In Nigeria, it’s nearly hard to talk investment potential without mentioning bank wavings. To encourage dependability, each bank may offer a savings or investment platform to its customers. As a result, if you want to increase your money, you should consider bank investments. Some of these institutions provide yearly interest rates of 10% to 15%.
- BOND AND STOCKS INVESTMENT
Bond investing offers a unique perspective compared to private and commercial ventures. The Federal Government is also in charge of introducing Nigerians to investment opportunities. Basically, the interest rate on FGN Bonds is frequently as high as 13%, making it a better option than private investments.
Investing in Nigerian real estate has proven to be one of the top investment options in the country throughout time. However, in order to go through this, you’ll need a lot of money. Several Nigerians are having trouble finding a place to live. Essentially, addressing this issue opens up a world of real estate possibilities. You might also think about renting it out for business uses like conventions, seminars, and public events. Real estate investment, particularly in commercial areas of the country, yields substantial profits.
- AGRICULTURE AND LIVESTOCK INVESTMENT
The agricultural sector is critical to Nigeria’s economic growth and development. In fact, you wouldn’t be far off the mark if you thought this was the best investment in Nigeria. In order to diversify, the government is actively working to resurrect the industry, which is attracting investors. If you don’t want to do direct farming, you can put your money into a firm that produces money from animal farming.
CONCLUSION
An investment entails putting money to work today in the hopes of increasing its worth over time. Investment is putting capital to work, such as time, money, or effort, with the expectation of receiving a higher return in the future than what was first invested. Due to the pandemic epidemic, Nigeria’s (and the world’s) financial industry has been in shambles. Despite its numerous obstacles, the need for investments appears to be increasing. This might be attributed to the public’s access to information, and the more activity in the investment sector, the greater the growth.
