He was appointed Minister of State for Education on July 14, 2011. Wike was named acting minister of education after Mrs. Ruqqayatu was fired, but he left his position before his tenure was out in order to run for governor of Rivers State. He was replaced by Viola Onwuliri.
Biography
Wike was born on December 13th, 1963. He is a native of Obio-Akpor, Rivers State, specifically Ikwerre, Rumuepirikom. Before attending the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Wike attended the Government Secondary School Eneka in Obiakpor, Rivers State, to prepare for his O’level exams (RSUT). Before beginning law school in 1997, he earned a Bachelor of Laws at RSUT. Wike received a Master of Arts in Political and Administrative Studies at RSUT as well. After finishing his education, Wike worked for a short time in a private law practice before entering politics.
Politics
After being re-elected in 2003, Wike first entered politics in 1999 as the Executive Chairman of Rivers’ Obio Akpor Local Government Area, a position he held until 2007. After completing his term as LGA’s Executive Chairman in 2007, he was chosen to serve as Rotimi Amaechi’s chief of staff as governor of Rivers State. During the reelection campaign for Governor Amaechi, he was also given the responsibility of general manager of the campaign team. He was appointed Minister of State for Education by President Goodluck Jonathan in July 2011, and in September 2013, he was promoted to Federal Minister of Education. In order to compete for governor of Rivers State in the 2015 gubernatorial elections, he resigned as a Federal Minister.
On May 13, 2015, the Rivers State Election Tribunal, which is situated in Abuja, started proceedings about Wike’s election. Because of anomalies and violations of the Electoral Act, Dr. Dakuku Peterside of the APC requested that the tribunal proclaim Nyesom Wike of the PDP the winner of the governorship election on April 11, 2015. Wike argued that the case should have been heard in Port Harcourt rather than Abuja. Justice Zainab Bulkachawa, the then-President of the Court of Appeal, dismissed Wike’s arguments and said that the tribunal should take place in Abuja for security concerns.
The Rivers State governorship election tribunal deemed Wike’s victory invalid on October 24, 2015. Within 90 days of the ruling, the election tribunal mandated a rerun of the governorship vote in Rivers State. Wike declared he would appeal the tribunal’s judgment. On Wednesday, 3 April 2019, INEC declared Nyesom Wike the victor of the Rivers State governorship election after delaying the process for a few days. On May 29, 2019, Wike took the oath of office at Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt to begin his second term. In his speech, he committed to prioritize the state of Rivers. According to Nyesom Wike’s goals for educational reform, public primary and secondary education will be free. On Monday, June 24, 2019, he made the declaration at a meeting held at the Port Harcourt government building. Both criticism and appreciation were expressed in conjunction with this, the latter coming from parents as well as former state principals and headmasters. Wike’s administration maintained its position despite their persistent demurring until they all disbanded. Through the State Ministry of Education, Wike announced free registration for state residents taking the JAMB exam in 2019. He simultaneously started building three significant flyovers in Port Harcourt during his second term as governor. Garrison, Rumoukoro, and Artillery all have flyovers.
