Oba Otudeko is one of the most prominent and influential business leaders in Nigeria. He is the founder and chairman of Honeywell Group, a diversified conglomerate with interests in oil and gas, flour milling, real estate, marine transportation, and hospitality. He is also a former chairman of FBN Holdings, the parent company of First Bank of Nigeria, one of the largest banks in Africa.
Early life and education
He was born on August 18, 1943 in Ibadan, Oyo state, into a royal family. His father was a king and his mother was a business woman. He had his early education at St. John’s School, Oke Agbo, Ijebu-Igbo in Ogun State, and Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo. He then travelled to the United Kingdom to study Accountancy at Leeds College of Commerce, Yorkshire. He also holds professional qualifications as a chartered banker, chartered accountant, and chartered corporate secretary. He has attended executive management programs at Harvard Business School, Hult International Business School, and International Institute for Management Development.
Otudeko’s career and achievements
Oba Otudeko started his career as a banker, working for 23 years at Cooperative Bank, Ibadan, where he rose to become the general manager and acting chief executive officer. He retired from banking in 1983 and founded Honeywell Enterprises, a trading company that later evolved into Honeywell Group. Today, Honeywell Group comprises several subsidiaries, including Honeywell Oil and Gas Limited, Honeywell Flour Mills Plc, Pivot Engineering Company Limited, Anchorage Leisures Limited, and Uraga Real Estate Limited.
Oba Otudeko has also held several leadership positions in various private and public organizations. He was elected the 16th president of the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 2006 and served until 2010. He was also appointed as a director of the Central Bank of Nigeria by the federal government. He has been the chairman of Airtel Nigeria Limited, Fan Milk of Nigeria Plc, Guinness Nigeria Plc, and Ecobank Transnational Inc. He was also the chairman of the Nigerian-South African Chamber of Commerce and facilitated trade and investment between the two countries.
He is the founder of the Oba Otudeko Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports education, health and economic empowerment initiatives.
