Part 1: Top 10 Things I did to win my 1st Business Grant ($5000)
Today, I want to share the steps I took to win my first major grant in 2016—8 years ago. Since then, I’ve won multiple grants and helped over 500 others secure theirs. The information and tasks I’ll share can position you to win grants if you take action.
- Discover Your Niche
I realized early on that I wanted to become a business development consultant, despite my degree in Soil Science from the Faculty of Agriculture at OAU. After graduation, I deliberately carved out a path for myself. During my NYSC year, I applied for an MBA program, and today, I’m almost completing my doctorate in Business Administration.
Being clear about my niche allowed me to identify and seize opportunities in my field. I often ask people: “What business would you like to do for the next 10 years and you will still be passionate about it?”
This question is crucial because success often comes from compounding effort—doing the same thing consistently over time until you become exceptional. Most benefits in a field are realized after 5-10 years of mastery.
This clarity has not only helped me win grants but also secure global opportunities. Today, I serve as a global mentor for several organizations and an expert reviewer for grants and fellowship applications like the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Tony Elumelu Foundation, Teach for Nigeria, among others. It has also opened doors for international consulting roles with organizations like GIZ and GOPA.
My Questions for You:
- What is your niche?
- What path have you carved for yourself?
- If money is not a problem, what work or business will you like to do?
- How can you chart a path within your niche to reach the top?
In part 2 of this write-up, we’ll explore how to identify grant and global opportunities within your niche.
