Iyorchia Ayu, a politician from Nigeria who was born on November 15, 1952, currently serves as the head of the PDP’s national working committee. He was a former senator from Nigeria who was chosen to lead the Senate during the Third Republic of Nigeria (1992–1993). Later, between 1999 and 2007, he held a number of ministerial roles in President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Cabinet.
Biography
He was born in the state of Benue, at Gboko. He went to the village’s elementary school. He then transferred to Mount Saint Gabriel Secondary School, Makurdi. Afterwards, he completed his A-levels at Saint John or St. Joseph School in Kaduna before enrolling at the Ahmad Bello University in Zaria to study sociology. Both his undergraduate and graduate degrees were earned there. For his PhD, he later enrolled in Leicester University in UK.
Ayu’s Career, Political Ambition and Achievements
He was the head of the Jos University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities and taught sociology at the University of Jos in Plateau State, where he also taught classes on the art and science of Marxism (ASUU). He gained influence among the majority of Tiv people in his own state of Benue after entering politics. Under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) platform, he won the Third Republic’s Senate election, rising to the position of Senate President. Ayu, who was a fierce opponent of the Interim National Government set up after the elected president Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola had been prevented from assuming office, was impeached by the senate in November 1993. He did, however, later advance to the position of Minister of Education under General Sani Abacha’s military regime. He presided over a symposium on technical education in Nigeria in March 1994 in an effort to learn from Germany, the US, UK, and Japan. George Akume, who served as governor of Benue State from 1999 to 2007, was believed to have Ayu as his political godfather. Ayu participated in the People’s Democratic Party’s 1998–1999 campaign to elect President Olusegun Obasanjo (PDP platform).

He was as Industry Minister under Obasanjo from 1999 to 2000. In July 2003, Ayu was named Minister of Internal Affairs. Reuters reported in September 2003 that Nigeria and its northern neighbors Niger and Chad were negotiating security agreements to combat smuggling, human trafficking, and cross-border banditry. He established the Prisons Monitoring Committee in June 2004 to protect prisoners’ rights to respectable living conditions. Ayu claimed that his government had begun distributing national identity cards in August 2004. The new card was intended to be used as identification as well as to validate other documents like passports and licenses. Additionally, it would serve as a tool for crime detection, data generation for government planning, and regulating migratory patterns. In June 2005, Ayu was transferred to the position of Minister of the Environment. Ayu urged for an efficient, ample, and predictable finance system to give the technical know-how and infrastructure needed for African countries to manage chemicals safely during a meeting in Rotterdam in September 2005. Ayu demanded additional funding for developing nations and fair access to UNDP/GEF money in October of that same year. He delivered a speech at a symposium on Integrated Coastal Area Management in December 2005. (ICAM). He commended ICAM’s multi-sectoral, comprehensive approach to managing the local ecosystem. Obasanjo fired Ayu in December 2005 without providing a reason.
Ayu joined the Action Congress after leaving the PDP and having disagreements with Obasanjo (AC). On the AC platform, he led the effort to elect Vice President Atiku Abubakar as president in April 2007. Ayu was detained in February 2007 and eventually charged with terrorism by a Federal court. Later, he was freed on bond. He protested INEC’s (Independent National Electoral Commission) omission of Atiku’s name from the list of candidates in March 2007. Dr. Iyorchia Ayu rejoined the PDP following Atiku’s comeback. Dr. Iyorchia Ayu was a co-founder of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He also quit the PDP before returning. A supporter of Atiku, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, cautioned Bola Tinubu that electing Muhammadu Buhari would be a mistake when Buhari was elected president in 2015.
