Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma GCON FSS psc, a politician and former lieutenant general of the Nigerian army, was born on December 9, 1938. He was a significant player in Nigeria’s post-independence military and political events. Danjuma gained a huge fortune through shipping and oil. From July 1975 to October 1979, he served as Chief of Army Staff. Under the presidency of President Olusegun Obasanjo, he also served as Minister of Defense. Businessman and philanthropist Theophilus Danjuma, better known as TY Danjuma, is well-known in his field. He serves as chairman of May and Baker, ntel, and South Atlantic Petroleum (SAPETRO).
Theophilus Danjuma Biography
Kuru Danjuma and Rufkatu Asibi welcomed Theophilus Danjuma into the world on December 9th, 1938 in Takum, Taraba State, Nigeria. Theophilus Danjuma attended St. Bartholomew’s Primary School in Wusasa before continuing his secondary education at the Benue Provincial Secondary School in Katsina-Ala. In high school, he served as captain of the cricket team’s first XI. In 1958, he passed the Senior School Certificate Exam. He then received the Northern Nigerian Scholarship and entered to study history at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science, and Technology in Zaria (next to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria). In order to join the Nigerian Army, he left the university in 1960 without finishing his studies. Daisy Danjuma is his wife.
Military career of Theophilus Danjuma.
TY Danjuma was a soldier in training who was devoted to his work and excited about it. His appointment as Congo’s second lieutenant and platoon commander followed his training as a result. In 1963, he was a member of the UN peacekeeping unit stationed in Sante, Katanga Province, Congo. When he was promoted to captain in 1966, his perseverance and hard work had paid off. He participated in the 1966 Counter-Coup in Mokola, Ibadan, Nigeria, with the 4th Battalion. It was evident in TY Danjuma’s life that diligence and hard effort pay off. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel just one year after being appointed captain. The civil war had scarcely begun when this occurred. Theophilus Danjuma led a battalion that freed Jaja Wachuku, the first Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives, the country’s first ambassador to the UN, and the Foreign Affairs Minister, from the Ojukwu administration’s custody close to the end of the war.
Danjuma represented Nigeria in 1970 at the Trinidad and Tobago International Court Martial. He presided over the special military trial that heard the case of those responsible for the attempted coup in Trinidad and Tobago. In 1971, he was promoted to colonel, and in that capacity, he assumed leadership of the military court for officers engaged in dishonest behavior and corruption. In 1975, he received another promotion, this time to Brigadier and General Officer Commanding (GOC). He was appointed Chief of Army Staff to Olusegun Obasanjo, the head of state, the following year. He assisted the President in thwarting the 1976 Dimka Coup, and he left the army in 1979.

- America Line in Nigeria (NAL).
The Nigeria American Line (NAL) was created in 1979 by General TY Danjuma (Retd). The company initially employed roughly 12 people, and by 2009, it had almost 250 employees, including about 12 foreign workers. The business initially had just one office, in Lagos, but it has now opened another one in Port Harcourt. With the help of the chartered ship “Hannatu,” he launched his business. In accordance with a bilateral trade agreement between Nigeria and South American nations, the ship’s operations were between Lagos, Nigeria, and Santos, Brazil.
Later, in 1984, TY Danjuma founded COMET Shipping Agencies Nigeria Limited. The primary reason the business was created was to act as a broker for Nigeria American Line (NAL). COMET, which has experience handling a variety of ships and cargos, has grown to become one of Nigeria’s largest self-sufficient brokers. Later, NAL and COMET were combined to form NALComet. The Nigeria National Supply Company (NNSC), DICON Salt (Nigeria), Iwopin Paper Mill, ANNAMCO, and Volkswagen Nigeria were among the company’s customers. The business joined the Mediterranean Line, Brazil-Nigeria Freight Conference, and American West African Freight Conference (AWAFC) (MEWAC). NALComet purchased a roll-in-roll-out (RORO) port in Lagos in 2005. The company became Africa’s largest self-sufficient port broker as a result of this achievement. In 2009, the company’s capacity at the ports of Lagos, Port Harcourt, Calabar, and Warri was around 200 vessels.

General TY Danjuma founded South Atlantic Petroleum (SAPETRO), an oil and gas exploration and production business, in 1995. The second-largest active oil block in East and Southern Africa is called SAPETRO.

Following the inaugural board meeting of Danjuma in July 2016, the information was made public. Political Life of Theophilus Danjuma.
In 1999, Lieutenant Danjuma rose to prominence in Nigerian politics. He supported the Rule of Law and democracy. All the army barracks named after civilians were renamed under his direction. The intention by President Obasanjo to reinstall himself and all state governors for a third term in office was opposed by the general. Among his political appointments are:
- Minister of Defense during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration in 1999.
- Chairman of the 2003 Warri conflict investigation committee.
- In 2010, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, who was the acting president at the time, proposed Jonathan as head of the Presidential Advisory Council.

Daisy Ukpomwan Ehanire Danjuma, a former senator from Edo State’s Edo South Senatorial District, is married to TY Danjuma. The couple is blessed with children, although the number of children is not known to the general world.

General TY Danjuma is a philanthropist who has affected lives in addition to his work in politics and business. TY Danjuma is in charge of the Committee for the Victims’ Support Fund. The leads the charge in providing financial, educational, medical, and psychological support to victims of terrorism and insurrection. The TY Danjuma Foundation was created in 2009 by Lt. Gen. Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma. The organization helps the less fortunate by offering them healthcare and education. - In 2015, he ranked 30 on Forbes Africa’s 50 wealthiest people.
- In 2016, the renowned JDAN Award for Excellence was given to General Danjuma by the Jukun Development Association of Nigeria (JDAN).
