Top 10 Business Development Hubs in Nigeria
The first thing I probably should do here is not assume that everyone knows what a business development hub is, and attempt to give an explanation. So, what is a business development hub? A business development hub is usually an organization or a networking platform (more like a club or something) with various resources, learning and tools made available to help entrepreneurs to create their business ideas and turn it into an enterprise with ease. What typical business hubs try to do is provide many of these tools needed by entrepreneurs to launch a business idea but which many of them lack access to most of the times. Resources such as computer systems, office working space, office furniture, telephone/fax, printers, document and templates for business communication, legal and accounting services, internet connectivity, even shared employees, just name it – anything and everything a budding company needs to kickstart that would have been otherwise a burden should the idea owner try to make all those things available all by himself.
Why business development hubs?
Business hubs have been called various names in the last decade. Typical names such as business hub, innovation hub, idea lab, innovation lab, business incubation center, idea nurture center, idea incubation center, enterprise hubs, and so on, are the commonest we have seen all around the world all of which are similar in their goals and activities. Business hubs tend to want to take care of many of the side issues (such as staffing, office space, accounting, paper works, technical stuffs, etc.) that are important to a business thriving, so that ideas and business owners can focus on the nitty-gritty of getting their businesses off the ground, or growing it.
The Silicon Valley
No one can successfully talk about the history of business development hubs all over the world without a possible reference being made to the Silicon Valley. So, what is Silicon Valley all about? The Silicon Valley is a very notable center for technological advancement and innovation development seated in California, United States. This region in the United States is where the headquarters of many innovative tech companies in the world are located. Companies such as Facebook, Apple, Google, NetFlix, and the rest of them. The Silicon Valley is highly reputable for creating a center for innovative companies to launch and be nurtured until they become highly successful and profitable. These companies in turn create jobs, more tax revenue, and higher stock prices which gives the United States of America a comparative advantage over other nations of the world.
Brief history of the Silicon Valley
Back in history during the great depression, there was a brilliant professor of engineering at the Stanford University named Frederick Terman. Terman got some ideas about building companies that will build the economy by facilitating research work for his students that can actually end up as businesses, not just papers. Terman encouraged two of his students, William Hewlett and David Packard, and a research was kick-started. Terman went on to get grants for his two students and he successfully helped them create the high-tech company that was eventually named after the two guys – Hewlett Packard (HP). Later on, as Terman grew in authority and influence, he encouraged faculties to sit on the boards of new businesses created from various successful researches at the school. He leveraged his contacts in Washington to win Federal grants for these researches and created what was called “The Stanford Industrial Park” where he facilitated the cross-fertilization of researches between Stanford University and local businesses. Great companies we know today such as General Electric, HP, Varian Associates, Intel and many others. By 1958, nothing less than 38 of such great companies have been created from such a great mindset and approach Terman brought into university leadership.
Many of the popular companies that we know today such as Google, Facebook, Apple, and so on were products of that same ideology which built a strong spirit of cooperation among many of those founders of companies who, for the most part, went to school together, and were very much like friends and colleagues. This makes them more susceptible to promoting each other regardless varied business interests. Also, the professional networks that were built from such collaboration made ease of information exchange a huge possibility. They all soon found out that the mutually beneficial collaborations between them have helped in making all of them more successful – and as a way of continuing the good work, and perhaps to preserve Terman’s legacies, the giant industry leaders have the Silicon Valley become a hub for nurturing ideas and innovations into maturity, thereby creating even a stronger economy for the United States.
