7 Things to do Differently as you Apply for 2021 $5000 Grant Application of Tony Elumelu Foundation for 54 African Countries.
I will be sharing with you based on my experience in mentoring and coaching applicants over the past five years on this Tony Elumelu Foundation grant.
Having seen myself not winning at the first year of the application in 2015, I tried again in 2016 and my idea of opening a Business Hub was selected.
In the last 3 years after receiving the grant, the hub has trained and mentored over 1000 SMEs, employed over 25 people directly and indirectly, and it has generated over $100,000 in revenue in the last three years.
This can only happen by the help of God through the support of The Tony Elumelu Foundation. The online training and $5000 grant helped us a lot.
So I will want you to see my guide not just to use for the Tony Elumelu Foundation Grant Application but any grant you apply for in the year 2020.

2. Preparation
Your level of preparation will determine your level of manifestation. In your preparation, study the Mission and the Vision of Tony Elumelu Foundation grant and see how to align your business with it.
Link up with the past question and start answering the questions on your own. Link with past fellows and Alumni of the Tony Elumelu Foundation grant to ask intelligent questions on how to apply and what you should do different in 2020.
After writing, get a professional to help you review what you have written. A past fellow can also help you to review. Take the review feedbacks and re-work on your application again.
Be real; don’t lie about your application.
3. Solve a Real Problem
Most people apply for Grants without solving a real problem. You must learn how to communicate this problem, either new or existing business, why did you set up your business.
When you solve a real problem, to get people to buy your products and services will be easier and to get grants will be much easier. If you don’t solve real problem, your products and services will not sell well.
When you solve real problem, to get traction will not be difficult. Traction is the progress you make in your business like users, sales, product development etc.
4. Have a Unique Innovation
Most people are not selected because your idea or business idea lack innovation. What is the Unique way you want to run the business.
How is your business different from others. e.g poultry. What is Unique about your poultry business? Is it the battery cage, is it the feeding ingredients that enables it to produce big eggs, is it that you are producing total nature organic produce without drugs or fertilizers. Are you the only supplier in your community with that product and services? What exactly is your uniqueness?
5. What is your story?
Fact tells, Story sells. Story telling skill is a critical skill to win grant opportunities. If you can’t tell your story, who will help you. Your story must be relevant to the business you want to apply with. What have you done so far to address the problem you are solving?
If TEF support you how will you scale up the business? This story must be compelling. There are parts of the question that address your stories.
You can use your CV and profile to form a story for yourself.
6. What is your Social Impact
The foundation is driven by SDGs – Sustainable Development Goals. The SDGs are 17. Your business must belong to one of them.
The 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) to transform our world:
GOAL 1: No Poverty
GOAL 2: Zero Hunger
GOAL 3: Good Health and Well-being
GOAL 4: Quality Education
GOAL 5: Gender Equality
GOAL 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
GOAL 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
GOAL 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
GOAL 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
GOAL 10: Reduced Inequality
GOAL 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
GOAL 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
GOAL 13: Climate Action
GOAL 14: Life Below Water
GOAL 15: Life on Land
GOAL 16: Peace and Justice Strong Institutions
GOAL 17: Partnerships to achieve the Goal
Who is going to be impacted because your business is in existence? You must come up with something very impactful in your social impact.
Don’t just do something that everybody is doing. Be Unique.

7. Pray! Pray!! Pray!!!
I am a firm believer that God answer prayers. After you have done all you can, pray about it. Some People have been selected, not because they had the best of applications but because some factors worked in their favour like location, Business Sector, Gender, more sponsors.
TEF in the last edition instead of picking 1000 people across Africa picked 3050 just because they had more sponsors and partners.
Just pray that everything work together for our good.
In Conclusion,
Don’t submit late; ensure you submit as early as you can.
If it is the last day you heard about the application, please still apply and submit. I have heard of stories of people that applied on the last day and were selected.
