INTRODUCTION
Ginger is grown in Nigeria generally in the Middle Belt States. The most notable are Kaduna, Plateaus, Niger and Nasarawa States in order of quantity produced. The production of ginger in Nigeria started vigorously in 1927 when an investigation was carried out to find a crop that would generate internal trade for the people of Southern Zaria Province (now Southern Kaduna), the traditional home of ginger production in Nigeria.
The plant is now cultivated in different parts of Nigeria, though the major producing areas include Kaduna, Nasarawa, Sokoto, Zamfara, Akwa-Ibom, Oyo, Abia and Lagos states. Ginger is a herbaceous perennial plant that is grown as an annual in commercial production. It is cultivated in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The ginger plant grows from 2 to 4 ft (61-122cm) high under commercial conditions. Edible ginger is asexually propagated from a portion of the rhizome. Although many varieties of edible ginger are grown worldwide, only two types are cultivated in Nigeria.
Commercial cultivation of ginger is very successful in Nigeria due to its market value. Ginger production is not only for income and revenue generation but it is also known for its medicinal value/health benefits and so the demand for ginger is high in the national and international markets. The harvested products will be sold to production industries as raw materials and also exported to neighbouring countries for revenue generation.
Ginger is marketed in different forms such as raw ginger, dry ginger, bleached dry ginger, ginger powder, ginger oil, ginger oleoresin, ginger ale, ginger candy, ginger beer, brined ginger, ginger wine, ginger squash, ginger flakes etc. The base of the leaves sheathes the stem. The leaves are dark green, 15-20 cm long, narrow, lanceolate and with a prominent midrib. The flowers are small, yellowish, speckled, each with a purple speckled lip and borne on a spike. When the plants are about 9 months old, the green leaves turn yellow. Ginger goes for domestic consumption and also exportation.
In Nigeria, Ginger farming is one aspect of farming with the ability to generate income and profits year-round. As it is, ginger farming is one of the easiest agricultural engagements a farmer can venture into and the demand for ginger is year-round, creating a veritable stream of income for the would-be farmer.
As a business, ginger farming offers an opportunity to earn a steady income and also provide employment opportunities for a countless number of men and women. On a national scale it also helps to reduce our dependence on other countries to meet our increasing food demand.
The high demand for ginger and its associate products has led to an increase in farmers springing up in many parts of the country. This, however, is still a far cry from the ever-increasing local demand for the product. Hence starting a ginger farm of your own either on a large, small or medium scale is indeed a very wise decision as this will bring immense financial benefit both in the short and long term.
